1 Our Father who art in heaven

On the first day the earth is created the first universal command is implied, to know God and its inverse not to worship idols. Light is “let”. White light is an imperceptible rainbow containing the 7 visible colors. This is Joseph’s spectacular coat of colors, a coat of light. The first day and first command correlates to the first sacrament of baptism when the father makes a new creation through the spiritual waters of the face of the deep by the movement of the spirit of God. This agent of God’s physicality is the Son as primordial Christ, king of the world.

2 Hallowed be thy name

On the second day a firmament separates (yet unites) earth from heavens. The second command is given to keep the Lord’s name holy, not to blaspheme. In the second sacrament of confirmation we embody and proclaim the walk to sanctify the holy name.

3 Thy Kingdom Come Thy Will be Done on Earth as it is in Heaven

As the waters are divided, order and form—the design of heaven—come into the world. The third universal command is to establish secular courts of justice to rule the earth. This is so the seed, given in this day, can be cultivated in gardens and bring forth delightful fruit. The third sacrament of Holy Orders explicitly connects and brings the heavenly court into the earthly realm, planting spiritual seeds to bear eternal fruit.

4 Give us this day our supernatural bread

On the fourth day luminaries are created marking time and history. A command not to eat the blood of a living animal is given on the eve of the dawn of creatures. Here we see in the sacrament of the Eucharist the only living blood fit to consume. How do such different elements come together in a sensical and essential way to explain the mystery of the fourth day? The son, the Godman, incarnates into the history of the luminaries to provide us with His supernatural bread, and only suitable living blood—the food of the new creation.

5 And forgive us our trespasses

Sentient life is created on the fifth day. With it comes the possiblity of pain that comes from harming another. The law against murder is given. The sacrament of reconciliation comes exactly as the inverse of the gravest sin showing there is no transgression that escapes God’s mercy.

6 as we forgive those who trespass against us

Terrestrial creatures of higher intelligence come forth on land culminating with man. The Law against theft is given so we must learn to respect the other. The sacrament for anointing the sick elevates the prohibition of theft to proactive acts of mercy. To love our neighbor is to do something for him. It is to heal him.

7 and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil

On the Sabbath the earth is sanctified by the Lord’s rest. The command against immorality is given. In our rest we must cultivate holy pleasure. But too much misplaced carnal gratification can veer into the immoral. The final sacrament of matrimony, the consummation, is given. As God is married to his people so too is this union reflected by the man and woman who become one flesh. Pleasure properly exercised is a holy wedding feast.

Amen.
